He-Who-No-Longer-Loves... Her.

Although I desperately wish to believe he loves me, doubt poisons my confidence whenever I catch Severus looking at my mother's picture. My heart breaks, watching his fingertips trace her features with the kind of gentleness that he's never bestowed upon me.

“Severus...” I sigh, unable to contain the jealousy-fuelled sound.

“Today is her birthday.”

“Oh...”

“I want her to know we're happy."

“She probably does.”

“And you? Do you think we're happy?”

I freeze:
“I...”

“We should be. We're together. In love... Aren't we?”

“You still love her.”

“That's... unfair. I never loved her like I love you, Harry.”

I agree with you on the point that Severus' love for Lily is probably among the hardest thing for Harry to deal with when it comes to his partners' past. ooh. that is hard - trying to take the doubt away that can poison the relationship. 'maybe i'm just a replacement.'
because she's dead the love he had for remains forever the same. stuck for eternity in place. While the love that he shares with Harry can grow and change as their relationship does. One of the reasons Harry should learn to let go of the doubt. she's not a threat to their love, she can't take him away (not really- she's dead. o.o).

Hummm... The real problem here is that Lily is dead, I think. Severus will never understand the root of Harry's insecurity because Harry chose him over Ginny.

Severus, on the other hand, never had the opportunity to chose anybody else over Lily at all. He never had the chance to choose Lily herself, since she rejected him first, so... Harry does have a point, even though I agree with your opinion about how he should just let all of it go. His mom is dead and buried. She's out of the picture in every way that counts. He should be enjoying what he has instead of making his life miserable with pointless jealousy...

Hummm... I don't really know what happens next here, but I do sincerely hope that Harry gets his act together and accepts Severus' reassurances. Sensual make-up sex will be the perfect way to disperse the gloomy atmosphere that they've got going, so... yes. I hope they go for it, too. :)

of course severus still loves lily. she was his friend and he pined for her for so long...but now she's in the proper position in his heart, friend and mother-of-his-beloved. :)

LOL. True. I think Severus does love Harry deeply, or he wouldn't have started a relationship with him in the first place. He wouldn't be attempting to cope with Harry's obvious doubts either...

Sev loved Lily long ago and in my mind he'll probably always love her too, one way or another. But then the human heart is a marvelous place indeed. It can stretch seemingly endlessly to accommodate all sorts of love for a huge amount of people, so Harry shouldn't really waste his time in pointless jealousy...

I'm glad that this drabble worked for you, fallconsmate. I was worried that it's a tad on the heartbreaking side of angsty when I posted it, so having your positive comments about it was a huge relief. :D

True. Doubting the sincerity of your partner's affection must be one of the hardest things to cope with, because half of the time your enemy is inside your own head and you know it...

Yes, Severus needs to be a lot more demonstrative with Harry, but I wonder how hard that might be for a man who is so used to hide everything he feels.

I think that Harry is so insecure about Severus' love because he still need to learn about Severus' emotions. First love is always the most memorable even if it wasn't a romantic love for Severus. And I think that Harry is a bit afraid that Severus is with him because he is Lily's son with her green eyes. It's all because his childhood with his so called family. I feel sorry for him but I'm pretty sure that Severus loves him because Harry is just Harry - not the Boy Who Lived, not the Lily's son, but just Severus' Harry. And it's very good that they have their whole lives to learn about themselves, about their feelings and love.
And I know that Severus looks at Harry with gentleness but Harry hasn't seen this yet. Maybe Severus is doing it when Harry is sleeping?

Now about your comment... I agree with you on the point that Severus must love Harry. I can't imagine him putting up with Harry's obvious doubts in so... gentle... a way if he didn't. He actually goes as far as mentioning both the words 'happy' and 'love' in connection with their relationship and if that isn't the biggest hint he could have possibly dropped about the depth of his affection then I don't know what else he could have said to reassure his partner.

Harry is too busy right now concentrating of how Sev behaves towards his mum's picture to pay attention to the way Sev behaves around him... Hopefully things will change as time goes by, since Severus seems inclined to be patient... ;D

Today I apply for four flats and now I'm waiting for reply from SBHA. They should phone me on Monday. So please cross fingers for me.
I'm still waiting for my fiance and dog, they are in France now because of dog and its passport (vet gave her something for ticks too early). So I'm a bit nervous.
But Scotland is beautiful as always and the weather is really nice (it's not raining :D)

I think fulfilling this particular prompt required a bit of sadness. I found it very difficult to portray a lack of belief between these two without breaking someone's heart, at least a little.
