Summary: Harry Potter finally understands Severus Snape when he sees him without shields. Unmasked. Disarmed...
When Unmasked.
The first time I heard Snape's laughter it hit me like a punch between the eyes.
It left me reeling. Dazed. Horrified. It was bitterness turned sound.
The second time he cackled with such desperate hopelessness that I was instantly afraid.
Today he walked out of the courtroom, looked up towards the sky and laughed until he cried.
The sound was so warm, so vibrant, that I finally understood something crucial about him:
His Snape is like my Potter. Is the role he was committed to play.
Is a front. A shield. A lie. Is the mask that hides... Severus.

Date: 2013-05-06 01:41 pm (UTC)It was great to hear from you again. So... you've been busy with Uni. That's what I thought. It's almost that time of the year when graduation is the main thought on a student's mind, isn't it? I hope you'll pass all your courses with flying colours, my friend.
Hummm... Rome... I loved it when I went there, are you going onto some other place in Italy, after that, or is it just Rome? Have you been there before? If not, then you are in for a real treat. Have fun! :D
Ok, now, about this drabble... I'm chuffed that you found it 'perfect'. That's a lovely compliment indeed. Thanks, as always, for taking the time to both read and review. Seeing not one, but two, messages from you in my in-box this morning has already made my day brighter.
Hugs

Date: 2013-05-07 09:10 am (UTC)Anyways! Yes, been busy with Uni. I don't graduate until the Fall though but still; will be happy once school is done and I can enjoy my traveling before going back home to the States :)
And I have a 3-day trip in Italy. From Rome to Sorrento through Pompeii and Capri? I think that's the place. And there's another stop too but I can't remember. Naples maybe? And no, never been there before so I'm super excited! (and highly nervous!-traveling by myself o:).

Date: 2013-05-08 07:42 pm (UTC)Well... looks like you'll be doing last minute cramming and packing at the same time, then. I hope your final goes well.
It's actually a good thing that you graduate in the fall. That will give you time to travel around a bit and Europe has plenty of beauty to offer that's a relative 'short' train-ride away. That's one of the things I most miss about the old continent, you know? USA just doesn't have the same train system...
Hmmm Rome, Pompeii, Capri... those are gorgeous, gorgeous, places. Maples is interesting, too, but it can't compare to Capri, coast-wise. Seems like you are going to miss my all-time Italian favorite: Florence. But then I'm an unashamed history nut, so it might not have appealed to you as much as it appealed to me. ;D
Have fun and stay safe!

Date: 2013-05-09 05:35 am (UTC)Ah, well. About graduating...I'll be back in California in the middle of June since I've already been abroad for a year. But after going to Rome, my parents and brother will be here and we're traveling to Vienna, Lucerne and Prague which I cannot wait for :D
*snickers* I love history too but just being able to actually GO is a dream come true for me. And it was cheaper then France sooo :D

Date: 2013-05-09 02:25 pm (UTC)I've never been to either Lucerne or Prague, so I can't comment about them, but Prague is definitely on my list of places to visit along with St Petersburg, Romania and Croatia. I've pretty much seen the rest of Europe at one point or another...
I agree with you that France isn't as affordable as other destinations, which is a shame since its reputation as a romantic city holds a kind of allure over many people's imagination. I know plenty of folks who'd love to visit Paris yet can't afford to do so.
As I said before: Have fun, shadow, and I'll see you when you are back. :D
