Severus approaches Harry’s table slowly, all tense limbs, pinched expression and wary dark eyes. He stills beside the unoccupied chair and whispers “You're still here” in a tone that brims with disbelieving wonder.

“Where else would I be?” Potter answers oh-so-softly.

“I’m fifty minutes late.”

“I know that.”

“Then why are you still here?”

“Because I’m waiting for you.”

Severus fidgets uncomfortably. “You think I want it. This so-called fresh start of yours.”

“You’re here, aren’t you?”

“It’s a bad idea, Potter. I know nothing about love.”

“I’m not looking for an expert, Severus. I’m looking for you. Just you.”

That's so very true. Severus' self-protective Slytherin instincts often lead him down the road of emotional self-sabotage. Hopefully, Harry's patience will help him stick around long enough for Severus to find his footing and, by then, they'll already be half-way towards their happy ending. :D

LOL. I've always thought that patient!Harry is sort of required in most snarry dynamics, dreamingjewel64, but I must confess that I simply adore taking him out for a spin and watch his endless patience manage to stump poor Sev at every turn. It makes for a lot of evil-author-is-evil giggling while I'm writing. :)

Hope can be a painful -if lovely- thing, and these two have been burned emotionally way too much to allow themselves to fall in love without restraints. Hopefully, Harry's patience and Severus' blunt honesty will steer them true while they negotiate the terms of a relationship. ;)

LOL. I've got no idea of how long Sev stood there, waiting for Harry to leave, but something tells me Harry must have out-stubborned him. He should get used to it because I have a feeling that's the most important manoeuvre in Harry's wooing arsenal. ^.^

Yes, Severus is definitely worth waiting for, and Harry is wise enough to have realised that already. Hopefully, Severus himself will grow to believe it one day, too.

This was a test, wasn't it? To see if Harry was serious about starting fresh. And Harry is right - Severus wants it, too. He came to meet Harry, after all. And isn't it a nice way to start,by learning about love together?

I don't think it was really a test, or at least I doubt that Severus was aware that he was testing Harry when he decided not to enter the restaurant. I think Severus is suspicious by nature and self-sabotage has become his go-to defence mechanism by now. He feels safer on his own. Taking the risk of getting into a relationship with anyone, let alone Harry, scares him half to death. Harry though didn't leave and that, right there, was so unusual a reaction that Severus couldn't help feeling curious about it, and maybe a little bit tempted into trusting Harry. Hopefully, they'll manage to navigate each other's hang-ups with enough patience to grow closer and closer together, until neither one of them can tell where one begins and the other one ends. ;)
