Summary: Choosing permanence is hard. Harder than being a double-spy. Harder than murdering a mentor. Harder than facing a dark Lord and his poisonous snake. Harder than dying, even.

Permanence.

Harry didn't know why his lover was on edge, but Severus' uncharacteristic distraction throughout dinner, coupled with the anxious fidgeting he'd have ruthlessly controlled -had he been conscious of it- was messing with his head.

They'd been together for eighteen months already and things were wonderful between them. 'Aren't they? Surely Severus isn't planning to-'
“What's wrong?” He finally asked, desperately seeking reassurance.

“I had to update my personal information, and I-I…”

“You?”

“Imadeyoumyemergencycontact.”

“What?”

“You're my emergency contact.”

“I'm y-your what?”

“I... Our situation is-I assumed...”

“Severus.”

“Yes?”

“Thank you.”

“What for?”

“For making us a family, my love.”

Awww, I like how Severus can say "I love you, I trust you, I need you" without words but with his actions.

I think Severus is the kind of bloke who would say this sort of stuff with actions. Words wouldn't be enough for him. Not after lily. And Albus. Not after how easily it was to convince every single one of his friends and Order allies that he'd turned rogue and had betrayed them all in favor of the Dark Lord.

I honestly hope I don't come across as 'really weird' when I take a deep breath and confess in a little, hesitant, whisper that I have absolutely no idea of who 'Sheldon' and 'Amy' are. Whatever Sheldon did to make Amy regret being his emergency contact, I sincerely hope Severus will be clever enough to avoid, and if not... well, I'm told a good dose of old-fashioned yelling usually brings naughty potion masters to their senses... ;D

The Big Bang Theory. A nerdvana US sitcom. Sheldon was VERY hesitant to get close to anyone and making Amy his emergency contact was seen as a major step in the relationship. She then got called all the time because Sheldon is a hypochondriac and she was less impressed.

Er... You realize that now I'm definitely worried about how bad my self-confessed ignorance is when it comes to these two characters, don't you? Does the fact that I live in the USA make it better or worse that I've never heard of these two before?

I'm not much of a TV person, you see? Actually I'm not a TV person at all. I'm more into books (and writing), that means I don't even have cable, so... oops! I think it's time for me to stop talking and go hide under the 'you're-totally-weird' bush. ;D

No, no hiding for you. Me, I've given up tv as well, I was so effing tired of the ads, and the crude banality of most programs ... anyway, that isn't too relevant.

That big bang theory program isn't too bad, but compared to the ones I like to watch, eg. Elementary, it's not so hot. Thing is, it's prepared in USA (here, see), and many, many ppl watch it. There're big bang theory fanfics ! Plenty !

I am trying to get rid of cable myself, only my mum won't hear of it yet.

Books and quiet as opposed to the wak wak wak of tv, oh Bliss ! And I'm now going off newspapers too, given the state of the world these days.

:D you wouldn't want to know how weird I come across to most ppl, believe me. Now that Terry Pratchett is no more, I'm reading Charles Fort, Vallee and other ufo related data-containing things. Oh gods :D But it's better than most things that pass as literature today.

I think everyone can come across as a little weird to others, particularly when we're sharing whatever it is that we're truly passionate about. I, like you, absolutely adore fantasy fiction and would choose it over almost anything else on the bookstore shelves, so it's lucky that the genre is sort of on an all-time high nowadays. :)

Breathless Severus is sweet! This must have been a very big step for him. (I wonder who his contact was before? I'd say it was Albus, for as long as he was alive at least. But after that - no one? Minerva? Lucius??)

It seems to be a special thing for Severus, almost like making his last will and bequeathing everything to Harry. (And I have no idea what it's like in other countries, but here you will not be informed about the medical situation of a person, if you are not a close relative or spouse.)

“Thank you.” - “What for?”
Ohh Severus... He's fidgeting all evening before telling Harry, and then he still thinks that this is not something that would make Harry feel grateful and happy? Why was he anxious, then? (No, don't say that Severus might have feared that Harry would *not* want this?!) =_=

LOL. Yes, breathless Severus is definitely sweet, and I'm sure this must have been a huge step for him, particularly because he was the first one to make it. I'm not sure how things work over here right now, but I think anyone who is named as someone's emergency contact will be informed of how they are doing regardless of whether they're family/spouses or not. There are a lot of unmarried couples out there whose rights would be seriously violated otherwise and family equality is a big thing over here at the moment. :D

I don't know who'd have been Severus' last emergency contact, but my money is on Dumbledore. And I'd bet he didn't bother to update it after the old man died, so this a huge milestone in their relationship, it makes it 'official', after all. :D
