Harry watches Severus walk away, unable to believe he'd been so stupid.
'I should have known six months of weekly pints and small-talk wasn't enough.' He berates himself bitterly, freezing mid-thought when Severus slows down, as if he'd heard him, somehow.

'Turn around. Turn around, please. I made my move too soon but it was totally sincere.' Severus halts in the doorway, all rigid shoulders, clenched fists and unraveling self-control. He stands there long enough to reawaken Harry's hope. 'Look back. Look back. I'm begging you.'

Amazingly Severus turns around. He's wide-eyed, and clearly terrified, but also willing to... surrender.

It just occurred to me that one could say that Harry is acting like a Slytherin, with subtly calling for Severus (in - or is it with - his mind); and Severus is being Gryffindor-ish, (scared but still) rushing in (well, he could have done the Slytherin thing and gone to think about it, or something - but he is staying) and being brave (you are calling it courage, after all!), facing Harry.

Fells like I'm constructing something that was not meant like that. Uh. Just rambling. Am I making any sense? -_-

I never tire of 'seeing' my work through other people's eyes because it often shows me such different interpretation for the stuff I wrote that I can't help but be amazed by it. I see why you'd think the boys were acting like a Slytherin and Gryffindor respectively, only in reverse from their own cannon houses and, although I hadn't noticed it myself until you mentioned it, now that you did, I can so very easily agree with your view that they have indeed adopted each other's strengths here.

The truth is that I was going for something completely different: I wanted to write about all the thoughts that cross our heads in those intense moments where we must make up our minds about something in a split second. There's always so much uncertainty to those moments, so many things we should have said, but didn't, because our thoughts just... froze. That's what happened to Harry here.

There are also many things that influence the way we respond to those moments and the questions they pose, things like shock, fear and surprise.Things that sometimes make us run away, even though we'd have liked to stay put. We just become so flustered by the unexpectedness of the situation that end up reacting defensively on pure instinct alone and make the wrong decision before we have enough time to think it through. That's what was going on with Severus here and I'm glad he had enough courage to let go of his pride for the second it took him to turn around and give himself the chance of having another go at making this particular choice. :)

Of course your rambling made perfect sense to me and I sincerely hope mine was equally understandable. See? You ramble, I ramble right back and we both end up having great fun along the way, so keep doing it whenever you feel like it, I promise you I don't mind, teryarel. :D
