I actually agree with you on the point that Severus needed to have this sort of conversation with someone. Having Rosmerta try to discourage him from having a relationship with Harry definitely helped him see that he has started to care enough about the Gryffindor not only to try to defend him, but also to seek him out whenever he feels distressed. That's a huge step forwards for Severus, isn't it?
