I agree with you on the point that Severus is like an onion and in here he allowed Harry to see a very private part of him. I've always imagined that Severus' relationship with Albus would have left him badly scarred due to how terribly it ended and having him share his thoughts about it with anyone surely is a giant step in the right direction.
