Harry stared, dumbfounded, at the new picture that adorned Severus' deserted chambers, tracing his own smiling face with slightly shaking fingertips while his heart pounded with hope.

Despite their year-long sexual affair, Severus refused to allow their relationship to deepen any further.  Using his desire to enjoy his recently-acquired freedom like a shield against commitment.  Constantly rejecting Harry's offers of... more... through painfully blatant neglect.

“But you're fighting a losing battle.  Aren't you, sweetheart?  Your head claims it'll take a miracle to make us work, but your heart knows better.  It'll only take love, Severus.  And patience.   Bucketfuls of both...”

i'm not sure how to read this... are the quarters deserted because severus is out doing something, because YAY he's gotten his head out of his nethers or are the quarters DESERTED as in severus moved out and the quarters are now for harry alone?

LOL. Cold meds or not, I must have messed this one badly if you can't make sense of it, fallconsmate...

Let's see... Severus' rooms were deserted but not empty and, since there was a new decoration item inside (Harry's smiling picture), it should have followed that Sev was out for some reason, but hadn't pulled a disappearing act altogether.

They are currently in a 'sex only' relationship (Sev's decision) and that means they don't live together, no matter how much Harry may want for that to change. They just meet every now and then for... well... I'm sure that part is clear. ;D

The appearance of Harry's picture on the scene is actually good news, since it shows him that Severus' heart is starting to want more out of their relationship, no matter how much he tries to deny it, so everything should eventually be fine with them as long as Harry keeps holding tightly onto hope, and patience, since we all know how stubborn Sev can be... :D

I hope that explanation helped you figure this one out better, my friend. Get well soon, please. This year's flu has been a right b****, hasn't it?

I think the appearance of that picture inside Sev's room is a pretty clear indication that our stubborn snake is finally ready to accept something more meaningful from Harry. It won't be an easy road, but it'll eventually lead them to happiness... :)

Harry is as always very understanding. He really know that he has to take small steps with Severus, just one by one. Because Severus is the most insecure person in the whole world. Just sex is fine enough, but relationship? It could be difficult, because Severus didn't believe that he could be happy. So this Harry's picture in his room is a very big step for him. And I damn proud of him.

It is true that my particular version of Severus is too insecure to jump into a romantic relationship without thinking twice, or even three times, about it. I'm pretty sure that Harry's understanding attitude will pay big time in the end, so they should be fine, eventually. :)

awwww. Poor Harry. but he'll get his man soon. Severus can't be completely heartless.

Though to be fair they probably started off with a very Syltherin agreement to not get attached- which Harry promptly forgot and fell head over heels.

True. This probably started as a very Slytherin agreement at least on Severus' part. Not sure if Harry has been biding his time from the beginning or not in this one...

Things are about to change for them here, either way. Severus' defenses have begun to crumble already and Harry seems willing to wait him out patiently, for once.
