Summary: Harry has a nightmare. Severus makes everything better.
In The Dead Of The Night.
He stares blindly out the window, trying to forget the awful images that woke him.
“Harry?”
His lover's voice curls around his senses and he turns around wildly, raking that sleep-rumpled form with visible agitation.
“I had a horrible nightmare. I dreamed that you died in the war. Bled to death in my arms...”
Severus gathers him gently, cradling him against his heart.
“But I survived. I'm right here.”
“What if you hadn't? What if...?”
Severus kisses him softly.
“No more what-ifs, Harry, please. The war is finally over. It's time to leave what-if behind and look forward to what-now...”

Date: 2013-01-20 11:35 pm (UTC)It's true that leaving what-if behind is a very hard thing to do, but I believe that accepting our life as it is will result in a happier "us" all around. I'm thrilled you found this piece beautiful. Thank you, as always, for your lovely review. ;)

Date: 2013-01-19 02:31 am (UTC)I like how you mixed cannon into the story. It made it just that more poignant. I'm glad Severus was there when Harry when he woke up.
Hugs till later! *passes over a cup of cocoa* Keep warm

Date: 2013-01-21 12:40 am (UTC)I'm thrilled you enjoyed Severus' reaction to Harry's nightmare. I wanted to play around with the idea that cannon's ending for Severus could have been Harry's worst nightmare, an awful "what-if" that still has the power of making him shiver with dread in the middle of the night.
Thank you, as usual, for taking the time to both read and review. You know that I absolutely adore hearing from you.
Thanks for the cocoa, too. I'm planning to accompany it with some lovely coconut macaroons, you should take some for yourself, if you like coconut that is. You know that I have no problem sharing ;)
Huge, bear hugs for now and I'll see you in just a sec, I think there's another message from you that I haven't answered yet.
